I tried to frame their whole bodies but I was too slow and clumsy so this is what I got (after a bit of cropping). I think it’s a happy accident.

This brings to mind three things:

1. "One day…little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers. I have a dream today." (M.L. King, and don’t think I’m not aware of the banality of quoting something so significant in this context; I’m just reporting my thoughts here.)

2. "Hand in hand. No don’t ask me to apologize, I won’t ask you to forgive me. If I’m gonna go down, you’re gonna come with me." (Elvis Costello)

3. This article by Stephanie Rosenbloom called "A Show of Hands" from the NYT of 10/5/06, which you can no longer read online without subscribing:

ON a brisk autumn afternoon, in the shadow of the marble arch in Washington Square Park, a couple visiting from Ohio walked along holding hands like two teenagers going steady, decades after ”going steady” went out of vogue.

When a stranger asked why they had chosen to join hands during their stroll, the man, Dave Findlay, looked at his wife of seven years and answered in a word: ”Connection.”

Or as the Beatles sang back in 1963: ”When I’ll feel that something, I want to hold your hand.”

Those simple lyrics turned an expression of teenage longing and first romantic steps into a No. 1 hit. Yet today, when Justin Timberlake is at the top of the charts with ”SexyBack” and the digital airwaves are filled with steamy lyrical declarations (”I’m into havin’ sex, I ain’t into makin’ love” sang 50 Cent in ”In da Club”), couples like Dave and Carey Findlay still intertwine fingers, kiss palms and link pinkies as they meander through parks, cross streets and snake through crowds.

”Hand-holding is the one aspect that’s not been affected by the sexual revolution,” said Dalton Conley, a professor and chairman of the department of sociology at New York University. ”It’s less about sex than about a public demonstration about coupledom.”

Nowadays hand-holding has attracted the interest of scientists who are studying its effects on the body and mind. And sexual health educators say it is a much-discussed topic among gay students who now publicly hold hands more than ever before but still must consider whether they want to declare their sexuality.

”I think it remains more important in an era of perhaps more liberal sexual norms,” Dr. Conley said. ”It remains this thing to be doled out.”

To hold someone’s hand is to offer them affection, protection or comfort. It is a way to communicate that you are off the market. Practically speaking, it is an efficient way to squeeze through a crowd without losing your partner. People do it during vigils, marches, weddings and funerals.

Usually it connotes something innocuous and sweet about a couple and their relationship. In rare instances, it takes on added potency, such as when President George W. Bush held the hand of Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia in Crawford, Tex., last year — an act of respect and affection in Arab countries — reminding some people of the film ”Fahrenheit 9/11,” which depicted the Bush family’s close business ties to Saudi leaders and which ignited conspiracy theories.

But, over all, few things are more innocent than a child grabbing the hand of a parent, for protection, direction and, as Mr. Findlay put it, connection. And with many children these days closer and more outwardly affectionate to their parents, chances are you have spotted a mother and her teenage daughter and perhaps even a father and his adolescent son ambling through a mall, scurrying through a crosswalk or strolling along, hand in hand.

Adult children and their elderly parents also hold hands, for balance, support and as a sign of love.

As for romantic couples, the opinions about hand-holding are as varied as fingerprints. But most people agree that it has merely changed, not lost favor.

”I think that for sure college students hold hands just like the old days,” said Sandra L. Caron, a professor of family relations and human sexuality at the University of Maine in Orono.

If they do, it is likely only after they are deep into a relationship — not in those early days of budding romance, when a touch of hands was the first act of intimacy between a couple. That was the hand-holding that the Beatles wrote about. (Followed swiftly by the sexual revolution, whose equivalent anthem might be The Rolling Stones’ ”Let’s Spend the Night Together.”)

Among more than a half-dozen students at the University of Maine, there seemed to be two universal truths: that hand-holding is the least nauseating public display of affection and that holding hands has become more significant than other seemingly deeper expressions of love and romance.

”It is a lot more intimate to hold hands nowadays than to kiss,” said Joel Kershner, 23. Because of that, he said, reaching for someone’s hand these days has more potential for rejection than leaning in for a smooch at a party where alcohol is flowing.

Libby Tyler, 20, said it was ”weird that hand-holding is more serious,” but true. ”It’s something that you lead up to,” she said.

There is nothing casual about it any more, said Rachel Peters, 22. ”Hand-holding is something that usually people do once they’ve confirmed they’re a couple,” she said.

But if that is not complicated enough, where you choose to hold hands also has meaning, the students said.

Drew Fitzherbert, 21, said that public hand-holding ”shows that commitment not only to you and your partner but everyone else in the community.”

Dr. Conley of N.Y.U. agreed. ”In the dark movie theater, in the dorm room, that’s a very different social act,” he said.

Are people holding hands as much as they once did? That’s impossible to quantify. But Gregory T. Eells, the director of counseling and psychological services at Cornell University in Ithaca, said he didn’t think so.

”I see more people on their cellphone than holding hands,” he said, adding, ”To some extent we are trading real face-to-face relationships, where there’s touch and body language, for electronic ones.”

Peter Shawn Bearman, a professor of sociology and the director of the Institute for Social and Economic Research and Policy at Columbia University, said that hand-holding in crowded cities like New York may simply be impractical.

”Maybe if the proportion of hand-holders has indeed gone down it has more to do with density (of humans) than the devaluing of hand-holding as a romantic signal,” he wrote in an e-mail message.

Whatever degree of hand-holding may be happening, there are good reasons to cultivate the habit — reasons would-be hand-graspers may wish to pass along to their hands-in-pockets partners.

”Based on what we’ve seen, when we get more physical intimacy we get better relationships, whether a mother and an infant or a couple,” said Tiffany Field, the director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine.

Even monkeys understand the importance of a hand squeeze every now and then. In ”Good Natured: The Origins of Right and Wrong in Humans and Other Animals,” Dr. Frans B. M. de Waal, a primatologist at Emory University, wrote that some monkeys hold hands in reconciliation after a fight.

James Coan, an assistant professor of psychology and the neuroscience graduate program at the University of Virginia, has studied the impact of human touch, particularly how it affects the neural response to threatening situations, and said the results of a recent study were more dramatic than he expected.

”We found that holding the hand of really anyone, it made your brain work a little less hard in coping,” Dr. Coan said, adding that any sort of hand-holding relaxes the body.

The study, which will be published this year in the journal Psychological Science, involved 16 couples who were rated happily married based on the answers in a detailed questionnaire. The wives were put inside an M.R.I. machine and were told they were to receive mild electric shocks to an ankle. Brain images showed that regions of the women’s brains that had been activated in anticipation of pain and that were associated with negative emotions decreased when their husbands reachedinto the machine.

”With spouse hand-holding you also stop looking for other signs of danger and you start feeling more secure,” said Dr. Coan, who led the study. ”If you’re in a really strong relationship, you may be protected against pain and stress hormones that may have a damaging effect on your immune system.”

Perhaps it is why so many people crave it.

Blogs and online forums are rife with complaints of those who say their significant other does not want to hold hands. ”When we go out, we always have a blast, but the one thing that bothers me is that he never holds my hand in public,” writes a woman on a ”love advice” forum on www.lovingyou.com.

For older couples, letting go of hand-holding may be one more sign that they are pressed for time and too swamped for little acts of intimacy.

”When do we make time to hold hands?,” said Dr. Eells of Cornell, talking about his own marriage of 15 years. ”Not very often.”

The couple is often busy shuttling children to and from school and extracurricular activities, not strolling through parks like characters in a Georges Seurat painting.

Sometimes, though, even errands provide opportunities. Recently, Dr. Eells said, he and his 9-year-old daughter were caught in a downpour after her cheerleading practice. The two grabbed hands and raced off into the rain together. When they finally splashed over to the car, the damp girl turned her face to her father. ”That was awesome,” she sighed.

“Pele Dancing” ~ Kilauea Volcano lava flow

NOTE By clicking on the Words In Blue you’ll open a photo in some, or additional information in others.

"Pele Dancing" was captured by French Volcanologist Katia Krafft while she and her Volcanologist husband Maurice Krafft were photographing and filming the streams of molten lava flowing down the slopes of Mauna Loa Volcano (on the Big Island of Hawai’i), during its 1984 eruption. Pele is the Hawaiian Goddess of Volcanoes, and this dramatic nighttime photograph shows her exulting in her awesome volcanic power." My framed copies (2) have hung in my home for over 30 years. It has special meaning to me.

I decided to post mine when I came across this Flickr photo today, posted by someone I didn’t know of, and intended as a Christmas greeting. BELOW — The "Juan Cortez" photo immediately reminded me of the "Pele Dancing" image.

I’d been meaning to post this and more photos (and video) for awhile. But none of it is digital. So I’ll at least do this much. These are my words, unless shown in quotes. It also shows me I should have taken the advice of friends who suggested I do a blog.

Maurice and Katia Kraft were internationally-known and respected French volcanologists, who traveled the world chasing volcanoes: They financed their travels by selling the photos and videos of their adventures — that had lasted many years – along with speaking engagements. National Geographic has spectacular footage of their work and comments. There is a lot available about them online.

"The small town of Kalapana was once a treasured Hawaiian fishing village. It was also the site of one of the largest and nicest black sand beaches. But in 1990, Madame Pele changed the landscape of Hawaii dramatically. From April through December of that year, lava flowed relentlessly, burying the town and the Royal Garden Subdivision under over 32 feet (10 m) of molten rock." I remember watching the incredibly detailed news coverage on television — night-after-night!

Hawaiian lava flows are very different from those like Mount St. Helens, which buried millions of acres in choking volcanic ash, whose terrific "megatons" blast blew-down ancient forests like toothpicks. Hawaiian volcanoes are generally not explosive, and their basaltic lava is beautiful in its pahoehoe form. Although it had flowed as much as 7 miles from its source, this lava remained molten, nearly 2,000 degrees fahrenheit. How? As it flowed on the surface, down the volcano’s slopes, it followed the terrain and created channels. As the top of the flow cooled in the air it eventually solidified the surface — and insulated the lava, which now flowed in closed tubes. That allowed the lava to flow great distances, while retaining much of its heat. But then the flow eventually reached the "bench" — flat, spread-out land created by thousands of past flows. Now it slowed greatly, and the lava flow broke-out seemingly everywhere, going in many directions. Yet it remained well-insulated, very, very hot. And it had the "push" of the flow continuing behind it, driving it to the sea..

Now began the torturously slow destruction: Homes and a few small businesses including the market, taro fields, farms, crops, tropical forests, anything that couldn’t be moved. Even the famous "Star of the Sea Painted Church" was threatened, until an incredible effort relocated it. This was the first place I went upon arriving on the Big Island; as soon as my plane landed at Hilo I found a rental car and drove to Kalapana at 3 AM to witness the historic ‘house-moving’

Residents in some cases watched for hours, even days, as the lava relentlessly approached their property; maybe cooled enough to crust-over, harden, and completely stop; only to break-out again a few feet away. The agonized residents had no way of knowing that the incredible volume of lava would eventually cover a vast area in sterile rock many feet deep. It would cover beautiful, ancient beaches, creating completely new shoreline — thousands of feet to sea from the former shoreline. Exactly the way every one of the Hawaiian islands was formed over millions of years. But that was no consolation to those who were watching the slow-motion death of Kalapana. [From the Hawaii Volcano Observatory website: In March 1990, the eruption entered its most destructive period of the 20th century when lava flows turned toward Kalapana, an area cherished for its historic sites and black sand beaches. By the end of the summer, the entire community, including a church, store, and 100 homes, were buried beneath 15–25 m (50–80 ft) of lava. As the lava flows advanced eastward, they took to the sea, replacing the palm-lined Kaimū Bay with a plain of lava that now extends 300 m (985 ft) beyond the original shoreline. In late 1990, a new lava tube finally diverted lava away from Kalapana and back into the National Park, where flows once again entered the ocean.]

In early May, 1990 Maurice & Katia Krafft had rushed to the Big Island of Hawaii because of the volcanic eruption and miles-long lava flow of Kilauea Volcano… and it’s destruction of the paradise that was Kalapana Village. I was there for the same reason. All I had arranged was a flight into the nearest airport, at Hilo.

Fate or whatever it was found us staying at the same small, remote lodge on the edge of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park… 30 miles away from the lava flow at Kalapana! As world-renowned volcanologists, the Kraffts’ had no trouble crossing the barricaded access to Kalapana Village. It could not be forgotten that, even though this was a natural event of the earth, it was also a nightmare of devastation because the lava flow had reached more than 7 miles from the volcanic caldera to enter this populated area. This was amazing to witness, but nonetheless a disaster. Being a firefighter I already knew that if I wanted to enter the area I had to do so with respect. I wouldn’t photograph any homes.

The Hawaiian Civil Defense (and director Harry Kim) were the authority here. I asked for a pass, and it was given because I was a Fire Captain they felt could benefit from seeing their handling of this natural disaster. And of course I was very interested in watching the lava flow close-up.

I’m not a volcano chaser; but the normally ‘safer’ Hawaiian volcanoes have always fascinated me. I had experienced the blast-furnace heat from this same volcano on previous trips; I had even hiked miles to see volcanic craters, along with ‘kipukas’ — ‘islands’ of native forest completely surrounded by lava flows; cut-off from the rest of the world, some are known for developing life (animal and plant) that exists only within their boundary. I walked on new earth that hadn’t yet broken-down into soil; places where existed no sign of ever having been walked upon by another person. I found small, fragile, volcanic residue called "Pele’s Tears", and "Pele’s Hair" — strands of golden glass spun only when erupted lava, thrown high into the air, spins out glassy strands thinner than human hair, that then travel great distances in the wind. Wow. Some incredible memories flow around me.

But the lava flows I’d seen had been at night. On one memorable occasion, I was talking to a NPS Ranger, Jeff Judd, and we realized we both had a common connection via my job in the Fire Dept. And we got-along great. After the tourists left the lava flow for their lodgings (a drive of 20+ miles across nothing but volcanic terrain), we hiked out across the lava fields in the dark. Although they were glowing an orange-red in the cracks, there was a solid, cooled surface we could walk on…. being careful not to step on any thin crust covering an active lava flow. Jeff had done just that years earlier, suffering painful third-degree burns and very lucky to escape with his life. We spent over an hour watching the lava, walking over slabs of solidified lava that was still moving on the molten, liquid lava it floated on: A mini-version of plate tectonics.

This volcanic activity in Kalapana was a rare opportunity. After receiving my pass I crossed the barricades, and soon met-up with Maurice and Katia Krafft, who were accompanied by Vivianne Clavel. She was a young Swiss doctor and volcanologist, in Hawaii to study the damage to the human respiratory system, when exposed to all the gases present in an eruption. Called "Vog". But right now, we were all intent on photographing and filming everything going on. Because we were so close to the ocean, getting fresh air was easy. Lava flows broke-out everywhere mauka– – away from the sea. Lava surrounded tall coconut palm trees; because of the high water content of the tree, the lava would cool and solidify, leaving the trunk to eventually dry-out and then burn-up from the intense heat… leaving ‘tree molds’ many feet deep. Lava flows that cover vegetation quickly will create methane gas beneath the lava flow; that gas will shoot-out long flames, or create gas bubbles in the lava that suddenly explode. Lava was filling in ponds and streams. The strangest sight I saw was a pond of grayish water shooting-up jet-black orbs that popped like huge bubbles from a carbonated drink.

We found a shallow stream-fed pond that ‘toes’ of lava were slowly creeping into, causing the water to boil near the edges of the lava. That area cooled by the water would solidify, and another ‘toe’ of red-orange lava would break-out on the side of the now ‘frozen’ part. There was always a bubbling, sizzling sound present, broken only by Maurice Krafft’s booming voice, as he yelled to Katia in French. Vivianne and I had agreed here to later exchange our photos and video, once we were back home in our countries.

I had been so excited to get out to the flows after getting my pass that I broke one of the most important rules: Be prepared to be out for as long as it takes. Now I was running out of film and batteries, and even worse: water. I hated to start back, but I felt I’d be able to come back better-prepared tomorrow. That was not to be. I had been allowed only this short but incredible few hours by Madame Pele. Early the following day the Krafft’s — hearing of a just-beginning-to-erupt volcano in Alaska, caught a plane to their next adventure. Vivianne was back to her research. Kalapana was no longer a place I could access. There was still plenty to see and do, and I continued my trip — even returning to Kalapana to shoot the lava flows that were now creeping across the black sand beaches — an incredible and strange sight.

It was one year later, June of 1991, that I saw a report on television that Maurice and Katia were in Japan, at a volcano named Unzen. They were on the ridge of a valley nearly 3 miles from the crater when the volcano suddenly unleashed a huge, violent eruption: A pyroclastic flow — hot ash, superheated gas and lava — blasted down the steep slopes and caught them in the open. 43 scientists, journalists, and firefighters died there that day, including both Maurice and Katia. Though I’d known them only briefly, I felt their loss as I would a good friend. Their deaths were a major blow to the community of volcanologists, and everyone who had been saved from volcanic activity because of their work.

I later received a letter from Vivianne Clavel, the Swiss doctor with us in Kalapana. She was not sure of my address, so had sent only the letter. She asked if I had heard the sad news about the Krafft’s, over which she was heart-broken. They were her best friends. She asked if we could exchange our photos and video, "anything and everything", in her words, from that day in Kalapana. Most of what I had was of the volcanic activity, but I put together a VHS video, along with photos, and sent them to Vivianne’s home in Geneva, Switzerland. I never heard from her again. I received a letter from Vivianne’s mother. She said "your letter was found by us in her apartment… our dear Vivianne disappeared on Mount Lokon Volcano (Sulawesi). She was taking photographs at the (edge) of the crater when it suddenly erupted…. You see, she died some weeks after her dear friends Maurice and Katia Krafft, and of the same death…"

From a website about them: "Since their disappearance, no one has taken up the torch with the same skill, charisma, courage but humility, love and desire, in the study, understanding and knowledge transfer of these phenomena that are beyond human understanding".

Weather forecast for Glastonbury Festival 2014: It’s going to rain (like it does every year) Glastonbury Festival: revellers put on a brave face as mud returns

It wouldn’t be the same without it.

Mud, mud, glorious mud and rainsodden tents – thanks to hailstones and lightning storms which hit the festival last night during the first top acts.

Canadian rockers Arcade Fire headlined the Pyramid stage during a heavy downpour while Rudimental were forced to cut short their set due to an electrical storm.

Music on all outside stages – and many inside ones – was suspended as the storm hit late in the afternoon.

The cloudburst lasted more than an hour and organisers took the decision within minutes to close the stages, as some festivalgoers took cover to escape torrential rain and hailstones.

The thunderstorm began at around 5pm, but the rain did not start for another 20 minutes.

By 6.45pm the storm had passed and the music started once again.

Early estimates indicate that around half an inch of rain fell on the festival site in less than an hour, turning the vast areas of Worthy Farm into a mudbath.

It is the first time in many years that an electrical storm has stopped the entertainment in mid-flow.

Early estimates indicate that around half an inch of rain fell on the festival site in less than an hour, turning the vast areas of Worthy Farm into a mudbath.

It is the first time in many years that an electrical storm has stopped the entertainment in mid-flow.

The downpours led to woodchips being spread over large parts of the Glastonmudbury site to soak up waterlogged fields.

The muddiest year was in 1997 when 78mm of rain fell eight out of nine days in the run-up to the event.

Glastonbury over the years

WHEN a few hundred hippies gathered in a field near Glastonbury in 1970 no one could have envisaged that they were witnessing the birth of the world’s largest open-air music festival. It was the day after Jimi hendrix died and the £1 admission cost included milk from the nearby dairy farm.

Organisers unwittingly enlisted the local hell’s Angels chapter to handle security but they are said to have made off with the ox roast.

Although memories of that first Glastonbury are now hazy it is widely accepted that a Bristol rock band called Stackridge has the distinction of being the first to perform at this now legendary festival.

As Glastonbury celebrates its 40th anniversary later this month more than 170,000 people, the equivalent of the population of Peterborough, will descend on this beautiful corner of Somerset for the latest four-day extravaganza.

The event has survived floods, lightning strikes and a gatecrashing crisis 10 years ago, which resulted in an estimated 200,000 people cramming on to Worthy Farm to set a record attendance.

Glastonbury has become a monster yet when the last drum roll has been sounded, the stages dismantled and 800 stalls selling everything from blankets to burgers cleared away, it reverts to a working farm.

Visit in late summer and the chances are you will spot a badger snuffling in the hedgerows. For that reason staging Glastonbury poses one of the biggest challenges in the entertainment business.

For the BBC too, which will be at Glastonbury in force, the festival is a military- style operation that will result in more than 40 hours of live radio and TV broadcasting.

That level of organisation is in stark contrast to the 1970 festival, which wasn’t happening at all until a group of travellers from Stonehenge arrived unexpectedly and threw it all together at the last minute. now nothing is left to chance.

An army of 34,000 workers including 400 first-aiders puts it all together. A huge 32-ton roller is used to flatten the uneven ground to prevent sprained ankles, while tractors fitted with magnets scour the site after- wards to scoop up hundreds of lost and discarded tent pegs which could harm wildlife. There are 20 bars, 300 showers and about 4,500 toilets.

This year the site has been ex- tended to cover almost 1,300 acres with a perimeter security fence stretching almost six miles.

The BBC will be taking almost 40 miles of cable and 47 cameras, while Glastonbury even has two underground, terrorist-proof reservoirs that can each hold one million litres of water.

“It is a balancing act because Glastonbury is both farm and festival,” says infrastructure manager Phil Miller.

“You can’t just concrete the place to make the job easier. I’m a laid back chap but from the beginning of May I do have sleepless nights with lists whirring through my head. Probably my worst nightmare is beyond my control: the weather.” The Glastonbury mud is the stuff of legends. In 2005 dinghies not wellies were the order of the day when two months of rain fell on the festival in a few hours.

The main stage, the Pyramid, was under a foot of water and power was lost. half a mile of pipes has since been installed to improve drainage but almost as bad can be a long, dry spell, which results in clouds of unbearable dust as lorries trundle in.

Although it is now possible to have a “Glastonbury-lite” experience by venturing in and out for performances, some 85,000 people will camp in the Worthy Farm grounds this year. Sewage must be collected each night, stored in a 750,000-gallon lagoon and taken away for disposal in hundreds of tankers. Scores of mobile telephones, unwittingly dropped down toilets, are first fished out.

The booking of bands is a round- the-year job but work begins in earnest to prepare the site in February. Only the main stage is permanent, the other nine have to be constructed from scratch, while it takes about a month to dismantle everything.

Power cuts are a disaster in waiting for any music festival so Glastonbury has both mains electricity and sufficient generators to supply a small town in the event of a failure.

Miller says that the 15-feet high security fence, which also spans the river that cuts the site almost in two, is impenetrable.

One of the low points in the festival’s history was the post-ponement of the 2001 event to give organisers time to react to the mass invasion by gatecrashers that had happened the previous year.

The BBC has been broadcasting from the festival since 1985 on radio, followed by television coverage in 1997. Mark Cooper, the corporation’s executive producer for television, hasn’t missed a festival since those first images were beamed to the nation’s living rooms.

This year more than 16million viewers will tune in to watch the festival on three BBC channels, plus there is online coverage.

“It’s the mother of all festivals,” says Cooper. “In terms of television coverage Glastonbury has become the biggest music event in the world but we started with just eight hours on BBC2.”

This year across the BBC network, including online and on the interactive red button, there will be 157 hours of live and recorded coverage.

Its army of workers will get through 80 pints of milk and 10 tins of biscuits each day. Like Miller, Cooper fears the elements the most. Past BBC coverage has been threatened by 60mph winds and countless torrential downpours.

“At times the weather has been biblical,” says Cooper. “I can remember John Peel standing under an umbrella

in 2005 saying: ‘It’s the end of the world’. Our position was near a stream that had burst its banks and we had to rebuild it in a completely different area. no equipment is weather-proof but so far we’ve never been forced off air.

That would be unthinkable.” Cooper’s own biggest personal disaster was forgetting his wellies one year but he says. “Communications are one of the biggest issues.

“In the early days there was no mobile phone signal at Glastonbury. even now when all the trucks are linked by intercom it’s often easier to walk to sort things out but try doing that in six inches of mud or worse. It’s slow and exhausting.”

In many respects Glastonbury, which this year runs between June 24 to 27, is even bigger than events such as the World Cup when the BBC can rely on feed from host broadcasters. At the festival every minute of coverage is self-generated.

Covering Glastonbury costs the BBC an estimated £1.5million. Paul Rodgers, editor of the BBC’s 6 Music, says:

“The festival is now part of our cultural heritage.

“For us, planning is now taking place almost all year round. If we don’t get the sound right there’s not much point in us being there.”

Both 6 Music and Radio 1 will have their own studios containing charts showing where every worker and piece of equipment is. Last year the corporation had to react to the unfortunate death of Michael Jackson, which forced a sudden change of plans as reporters were dispatched to every corner of the grounds to seek reaction from the stars.

“It’s a live event so it’s inevitable that some of our coverage is on the hoof but that is what makes it so exciting,” adds Rodgers.

“The worst possible case scenario for us would be a total technical blackout.” Plenty of spares are packed because popping out to the BBC storeroom or the shops for a replacement light bulb is not really an option at the festival.

Another problem for the BBC is securing agreement from the stars about how much of their set can be broadcast. In the past David Bowie and Rod Stewart have limited live coverage to a handful of songs.

Last year Bruce Springsteen topped the bill triumphantly with a two-and-half hour set which cost the organisers a £3,000 fine for breaking a midnight curfew.

Such is the lure of the festival that leading musicians and bands regularly agree to perform for a fraction of their normal fees. Residents in the nearby hamlets of Pilton, Pill and Sticklynch are generally a tolerant lot, although some are known to decamp for festival week, or they make a few bob by renting out their homes. Tradition- ally the villagers are given free tickets.

Despite all the meticulous planning the unexpected can and does happen. This year Glastonbury lost one of its headline acts, U2, after a back injury suffered by Bono forced the band’s late withdrawal. For Michael Eavis, the dairy farm owner and Glastonbury founder, it meant a frantic search for a replacement before Gorillaz stepped in.

There is barely a big band that hasn’t performed there but he has still to entice the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin to play. His daughter Emily, who works behind the scenes to arrange the line-up, says the main criterion for selection is stage presence.

“You need to be able to play a really good live set. We’re not bothered about how many records you’ve sold.”

They were initially told by Springsteen’s agent that they couldn’t afford him but the Boss relented after being sent a dossier about the festival’s history and donations to good causes.

The power of Glastonbury had worked its magic again.

About three months ago, my sister discovered this beautiful 1955 Dodge Jobline pick-up truck in a local Charleston newspaper. Knowing how much I’d always dreamed of owning a 1950’s red pick-up, she rang to tell me about the listing and I located it online. We talked about how beautiful it was and of all the things we’d love to do with the truck, but the price was simply too high and over time, we soon forgot about her.

Then, about two weeks ago, our Granny passed away and I found myself back in S.C. for her burial. One day shortly after, with emotions still at an all-time high, my sister and I decided we would go kayaking where our Granny and Grandpa were born and raised. It would’ve been a great trip, except none of the weather forecasters had predicted the severe thunderstorms that ensued and we quickly found ourselves in need of alternative plans. What better to do than shop, right?

With our trip canceled, we found ourselves riding around Mt. Pleasant with a ridiculously large two-person kayak on our roof and "nothing" to do. I mentioned thinking it would be nice to go back and check out this 1960’s “Endless Summer” type canary yellow station wagon we’d passed the day before, so we headed to the garage where it was parked. After perusing a wide array of vintage vehicles, we made out way to the garage and struck up a conversation with the mechanics. We inquired about some of the vintage vehicles and mentioned we’d found a red 1950’s red pick-up a few months back and asked if they’d ever seen one. They mentioned knowing of both a black and a white 1950’s truck, but no red one. As the conversation neared the ½ hour mark, one of the mechanics remembered he’d seen a red 1950’s pick-up parked at a law firm not far from the shop. As soon as he said this I thought (and my sister claims I said out loud), “That’s it!”.

After getting a few other places / people’s names who might know where to find a 1950’s pick-up, we took our chances and headed to see the truck the mechanic had mentioned seeing "a while back". We had nothing to lose by looking. As soon as we saw the vehicle and drove around the back-end, I knew it was the same one my sister had found three months prior. On the driver’s door window hung a sign advertising a slashed price and a phone number. After taking some photos and checking out the vehicle, my sister rang the listed number. We’d both just assumed the truck belonged to a man, so when a woman answered, she was surprised. After speaking for a few minutes, it became clear the voice at the other end was not going to “hand the phone over” (to a man). So, my sister asked, "Are you the owner?", to which the woman replied, "Yes!".

Needless to say, I think we were all a little surprised. The owner – Christine – explained she’d moved to Charleston from NYC to get into the bakery business and had bought the truck to "pick up men" – yes, that’s why she’d gotten it. At this juncture, my sister looked like she’d seen a ghost. There were several reasons for this "ook". One being, she’d been born in NY and two, her sister (that’d be me) currently lives there. Thirdly, she’d been trying to figure out how to transition out of a career in radio and was thinking of starting a baking business! I’m not kidding. When she asked Christine if owning the truck had indeed helped her meet any men, she said it hadn’t, but that the truck had been rented quite a few times for photo shoots and commercials. Gears in our heads quickly began turning. And Christine was so happy that women were calling about the truck because she specifically wanted to sell the truck to a female. She told us to go into the offices and get the keys to go for a spin.

She’d also mentioned the mechanic who’d worked on the truck was close by and told us where to find his garage. After going in and speaking with a lovely woman who had some problem locating the keys, we went back outside to wait. After a few minutes, the keys arrived and the girl mentioned if we could wait, that the mechanic who’d worked on the vehicle would be coming by to pick both she and her Mum in a few minutes. Huh? Why?!? Because the mechanic was her father! When we heard this, it was like a bolt of lightening had struck. How was it possible the mechanic we’d just been told about and whom we were going to go visit would be coming to us? Things were just getting too weird, so, of course, we waited. It seemed kizmit was taking over at this juncture.

It had been a while since I’d driven a standard, though it’s been my main transmission for the majority of my driving years, so I wasn’t too worried. And, my sister had learned how to drive a standard shift on a tractor on someone’s farm, so between the two of us, we thought we’d be okay. Not long after, the mechanic arrived. If seemed the truck hadn’t been started in a while, so he had to jump-start her and we all piled in. He took us to a nearby car park and we drove around back to an empty area. My sister decided to go first and we all had a really good laugh. Next, it was my turn and after the mechanic properly explained the H-gear pattern, I did an so-so job with the ½ ton, no power steering, no power breaks slant V6 badass – though this isn’t to say it wasn’t nerve-racking as hell! Not only was she extremely difficult to maneuver, but somehow driving her made one’s hands completely black and at some point, we’d all touched our faces and had black marks all over ourselves and our clothing. We looked like Al Jolsen in his black-face – except, in reverse!

After returning to the law firm, we said we’d be back in a few days. We spent a day trying to figure out how we could make getting this truck happen and returned to take (what we’d already named) “Big Red” to a few mechanics shops and restoration experts the following day. Before getting out on crowded main roads, we decided to get some more practice driving the truck and so, after some quick cleaning of the windows and interior, we headed back to that nearby car park.

It’s a good thing my sister had learned to drive on a tractor, because on this particular 97degree afternoon, “Big Red” was akin to driving around in a 1/2 ton tractor. Driving Red was roughly the equivalent to taking part in a triathlon in 105 degree temperatures. Because she’s so hard to drive, on one occasion, I had to grab the giant wheel and help my sister make a turn! Yes, it took two of us and we’re both over 5”10, with plenty of muscle. Oh how I was beginning to appreciate power steering!

Jerking in-and-out-of all three gears, my sister finally stalled Big Red for a second time – sending us to a halting stop. Sweating and dirty, she screamed out in frustration, “Oh my God, I can’t do this! We’re crazy! This is never going to work!”. Searching for the inspirational words an older sibling is supposed to have at the ready, I turned my head and spotted this white big rig parked just beside us and nearly fainted. For, it was a Cardinal line truck with no more than two cardinal emblems – one on the cab and one on the trailer – emblazoned upon it.

You see, our Grandfather, who had died when we were very small was a country boy (related to Swamp Fox – yeah!) and his favorite bird was the cardinal. We know anytime one crosses our paths, to pay close attention. Gasping, I directed her attention right toward the “cardinal spotting” and we both nearly lost it. Tears welled up in both our eyes. My sister then took a deep breath and said, “Did you see the pair of cardinals fly past us as we drove back here?”. I hadn’t and said so, but quickly grabbed my camera to capture the rig carrying the cardinal message from our Gran.

While neither said so, in that moment, I think we both knew we’d buy the 1955 Dodge- even before we took her to get checked out. Can’t go against the elders, right? We offered nearly half the original price and Christine accepted. So, if for any reason, you’re in need of a classic 1955 Dodge pick up truck in fire engine red, you know who to contact!

BANANAS IN COSTA RICA:
20 Mar 2014
Fresh Plaza – Global Fresh Produce and Banana News:

Jorge Arturo Sauma Aguilar, manager of CORBANA
Costa Rican bananas competing in a saturated world market:

Although more famous for its pineapples, Costa Rica devotes around 44,000 hectares to the cultivation of bananas; less than 1% of the country’s territory. 48% of the business is in the hands of small producers and the rest in those of companies such as Chiquita, Dole and Del Monte.

Costa Rica’s most common bananas are the Gran Enano Valery and the famous Cavendish, "which is considered the world’s best banana," says Jorge Arturo Sauma Aguilar, manager of CORBANA.

The banana market is becoming increasingly saturated:
"Banana production has expanded without control in recent years and this is leading to an increasingly more saturated market. Considering the market’s global status, all producing countries should hold off a little if they wish to continue making a profit. First it was Ecuador, now also the Philippines, Guatemala or Cameroon, whose produce stands at considerably lower prices," he explains.

"The wages of a Costa Rican labourer are not the same as those of an African or Filipino and we cannot compete with that. That is why we need to do as much as possible to let consumers know about the value added by ethical social and environmental policies. We are currently working with the EU for the designation of a Protected Geographical Indication to Costa Rica’s bananas."

The European Union and the United States are the two largest markets for Costa Rica’s bananas, and Sauma Aguilar believes that, despite the oversupply, there is still room for growth.

"I think we can still grow in the North American market, and our supply volumes to some EU countries could also increase. We are also really interested in entering markets in the Middle East, like Dubai or Saudi Arabia, where healthy eating habits are being strongly promoted by their governments."

Race 4 Fusarium: the greatest threat to Costa Rican bananas
Competition with other countries is not the only obstacle for Costa Rica’s banana sector. "The greatest threat to our produce is the Race 4 Fusarium virus, which has yet to affect us, but if it did, it would cause incalculable losses.

At the latest congress organised by Corbana we recognised it as a real threat, and we determined that a joint effort from all Latin American nations, as well as the exporting countries, is required to prevent such threats."

Fairtrade and organic in Costa Rica:
Even though not many Costa Rican companies are Fairtrade certified, Sauma Aguilar believes that Corbana is fundamentally a Fairtrade producer, as "great efforts are carried out for the protection of the environment, with assistance from the Environmental Banana Commission (CAB), and for improvements to be made to the labourers’ social structure. There is still a lot of work to do, but most of our producers are certified by Global Gap, ISO 14001 or Rainforest Alliance."
Regarding the organic market, "it is harder to grow organic bananas in Costa Rica than in other places like Piura, in Peru. Temperatures are very high here and we need some phytosanitary control mechanisms."

All three forms of trade likely to prevail:
In what concerns banana trade, Sauma Aguilar believes that, despite the latest trend among large supermarket chains, like Walmart and Tesco, of working directly with producers, the other two forms of trade are also likely to prevail.

"I think that there will still be producers working through large distributors, as well as others exporting the fruit themselves. All trading forms are acceptable as long as growers are able to make a profit."

About CORBANA:
The National Banana Corporation (CORBANA) is a non-state, public entity, founded with the goal of promoting research in Costa Rica’s banana industry and improving the situation for producers. "The Costa Rican government hands over all research and technological transfer issues to CORBANA. We also offer assessment to the government in matters of trade and treaty development, such as the latest one signed with the European Union," concludes Sauma Aguilar.

BANANAS – GOOD or BAD??

by Amy Margulies, lead registered dietitian for Retrofit
"why-is-everyone-so-terrified-to-eat-bananas-a-dietitian-peels-back-the-truth":
You’ve probably heard people talking, or read articles online, about why eating bananas is bad for you nutritionally and can impede weight loss. While some people insist that bananas are just fine, others are convinced this is a fruit you should stay away from if you’re trying to lose weight – and many do, just in case the rumors are true. But what’s the real deal with bananas? It’s time to peel open this myth.
What the critics are saying
The controversy started with Dr. Susanna Holt, an Australian researcher who developed the Satiety Index, a way to evaluate how full different foods make you feel. “We found that bananas are much less satisfying than oranges or apples,” Holt stated at the conclusion of the satiety study.
Bananas are generally higher in calories from carbs than most fruits. So for those who are counting calories, this may seem like a poor choice for a snack. People have also observed that bananas cause a “binding” effect, or put more simply, they cause constipation. That’s something you don’t want when you look to the scale for signs of progress.
Another side to the story
While the above claims may be true, there are more positive attributes to eating bananas. It turns out that they also contain resistant starch, a dietary fiber that the body can’t actually absorb. As a result, you feel full without absorbing additional weight in the long term. What’s more, according to Dr. Janine Higgins at the Colorado Clinical and Transitional Sciences Institute, research indicates that resistant starch can increase the rate of fat burning your body does after a meal.
Combined with potassium and other vitamins and minerals that occur naturally in bananas, there are some serious benefits that the banana-mashers tend to ignore. It’s no surprise we see stories from people like Loni Jane, who lost weight and improved her health significantly when she made bananas a major part of her diet.
What’s your take?
Some people will always believe the hype, despite the facts. But the truth is that the science is in favor of bananas being part of a healthy, weight-loss friendly diet. To get the most benefit, eat bananas that are still a little bit green – that’s when there’s more resistant starch. As a banana ripens, the starch breaks down and becomes less resistant to absorption.
We’re not recommending that you eat 10 bananas a day like Loni Jane, but eating them in moderation as part of a weight loss diet and active lifestyle will bring you nothing but positive benefits – so peel away!
